QUICK FACTS ABOUT SHADE SAILS
I HAVEN’T HEARD OF SHADE SAILS, HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN AROUND?
Modern shade sails had their origins in Australia and South Africa in the 1990’s, where their popularity first skyrocketed. When they were introduced in the United States, the warm climate states were the first to embrace them, and they are now popular everywhere because people love their curved edges and architectural flair. Advances in materials and hardware have resulted in a beautiful and durable product. Awnings NH is currently establishing itself as the premier dealer of shade sails in New England
WHAT ARE THEY MADE OF?
Shade sails are made from a breathable, tightly knit fabric which has double reinforced corners and extra stitching at stress points. This material is both strong and long lasting.
DO THEY PROVIDE ADEQUATE UV PROTECTION FROM THE SUN?
Absolutely, but The darker colors do provide slightly more UVA and UVB protection from the sun. To give you a comparison, White shade cloth will filter 93% of the UVA
& UVB, and black cloth filters 95.8%. All other colors will be within that range.
DO THEY PROVIDE ADEQUATE PROTECTION FROM THE RAIN?
Because of the breathable fabric, shade sails are designed to let some water pass through, so they are not meant to be rain shelters. While a light rain might roll off to some degree, they won’t protect you in a heavy rain
WHERE ARE THEY MANUFACTURED?
The shade sails that Awnings NH provides are proudly made right here in the U.S, (California) Shazeebo Shade Sails are the highest quality products on the market. There is a 10 year warranty on the fabric, and a lifetime warranty on the workmanship.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET MY NEW SAIL SHADE?
Once the dimensions and details are determined, and the order is placed, you can anticipate about 10 – 14 days until the shade sail arrives at your home.
DO THESE SHADE SAILS COME IN STANDARD SIZES, OR ARE THEY CUSTOM MADE?
We offer 4 different “standard” sizes (with sides from 12′ to 25′) which are versatile enough to integrate with houses of all dimensions, but in the event the standard sizes won’t fit the bill, they can be custom designed at the factory to fit your particular needs.

WHAT SHAPES AND COLORS ARE AVAILABLE IN YOUR SHADE SAILS?
The most common fabric shapes are triangular, square, and rectangular. They can be hung as is, or we can utilize installation techniques setting the high and low points diagonally opposite one another (called a “hypar” design). This creates a twist in the sail and a a very impressive modern look. New colors are always being added, but at this time about 16 different colors are available (watch the above video for great examples)
CAN THEY BE TAKEN DOWN?
Yes. They can, and should be taken down if very high winds are anticipated. Of course here in New England, they would be taken down before the winter begins. They are not designed to support snow loads.
CAN THEY BE CLEANED?
Of course. Sail awnings can be hosed in place, but many people opt to just take them down and clean them with some gentle scrubbing
WOULD SHADE SAIL INSTALLATION BE CONSIDERED A DIY PROJECT FOR HOMEOWNERS?
While technically shade sails can be installed by the homeowner, it is at the very least, a 2 man job. Depending upon on the complexity of the project, it could involve
things like digging holes and pouring concrete for the pole foundations (poles need to anchored below the frost line-at least 4′ down). Working with tools and hardware such as eye bolts, brackets, chains, cables, lag bolts, turnbuckles, etc., and there is inevitably lots of ladder climbing. It is also critical that these products are hung with the correct tension. If shade sails are improperly installed, you’re looking at future problems. There are, in truth, important engineering decisions to be made, so it is best to let experienced professionals do the installation. The team at Awnings NH have the expertise to do the job right the first time, and they always guarantee their work. This gives you peace of mind in knowing you can enjoy these beautiful shades problem-free for years to come.
DO YOU PROVIDE A SKETCH FOR THE HOMEOWNER OF WHAT THE SHADE SAIL AWNING WILL LOOK LIKE?
Of course. If the homeowner would like to see everything in more visual detail with exact dimensions relating to their own house, for a fee we will create a custom CAD (computer aided design) video of the project, as we did in the following clip:
ARE THEY EXPENSIVE?
Your final cost will be determined by several factors. The size of the area you need covered, the engineering considerations for that area, the number of support poles you’ll need, etc. This is not the same as buying a cheap shade sail at a big box store and stringing it up between trees. Our sail awning installations are permanent structures, and we use the highest quality fabric materials available, so you can count on enjoying your shades for a long, long time, and not have to worry about the shade getting detached or falling apart. There is a deceptive amount of engineering and work involved in custom sail shade manufacture and installation. The more poles you need, obviously, the more expensive your final cost will be. A rough ball park, for a full treatment project requiring multiple poles, averages out to about $18.00 per square foot installed (i.e. 15′ x 20′ would come in around $5,400) Smaller and less involved projects will, of course, have a lower final cost
